COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is a Candidate for Hormone Replacement?

While many people may benefit, not everyone is a candidate for hormone replacement.  Determining whether you could benefit from hormone replacement will require a thorough initial evaluation, including laboratory evaluation and for women: recent mammogram and Pap smear. The physicians at IWC can help determine if and what hormone replacement therapy is right for you.

What are pellets?

Pellets are plant based, bioidentical hormones made in a yam or soy base that can provide long lasting and controlled release of hormones.  Many people prefer pellets for bioidentical hormone therapy due to their ease of administration and controlled release.  Patients with a Yam or soy allergy are often still candidates for pellet therapy.

How often is pellet insertion necessary?

The frequency of pellet insertion depends upon patient activity level and metabolism.  In general, pellets typically last 3-4 months following insertion.

Are pellets FDA approved?

The contents within the pellets are FDA approved and the manufacturing process of the pellets is regulated by the State pharmacy board.  At IWC, all medications have been vetted by the physicians and are trusted in the care of the physicians and their families.  While the process of inserting the pellets is not FDA approved, the physicians have undergone additional exclusive training in the insertion of pellets.

Is blood work required prior to treatment

Laboratory work will be required prior to initial treatment, approximately 5-6 weeks following the initiation of treatment and then annually thereafter.  If you have previously been on HRT, we may be able to utilize your previous blood work in order to continue your current therapy.

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects may include, acne, bloating, and increased hair growth, particularly at the beginning of your treatment regimen.  Some research indicates that HRT may increase the risk of: blood clots, hormone related cancers, cardiovascular disease and stroke, increased red blood cell count, decreased testicle size and sperm count, as well as mood swings and breast tenderness. At IWC we are committed to optimizing your treatment regimen to minimize and treat side effects while optimizing the benefits of the medications.

What if I am already on treatment with another provider?

We can easily transition you to continuing your current treatment regimen or transitioning to an alternative therapy at IWC.

What if I have a history of cancer?

A history of cancer does not prohibit everyone from hormone replacement therapy.  We will have to determine what is the ideal treatment regimen for you, and this will likely require collaboration with your primary care physician and/or oncologist.

What does the medication cost?

Cost depends upon the medication chosen, previous affiliation with IWC as well as frequency of follow up. Typically the initial year of medication management requires a minimum of monthly follow up.
